Let’s be honest, most of us want a rock-star dog: happy, outgoing, socially bombproof, and irresistibly cute. But what we actually need in a dog varies from adopter to adopter. That’s where Dexter shines.
Some dogs are built to go everywhere and do everything. Others truly thrive just being at home with their people. Dexter fits squarely in the “homebody” category. He’s the ideal companion for someone who wants a loving dog at home and doesn’t need a partner for car rides or outings.
Dexter is 3½ years old, about 50 pounds, with an average energy level and a wonderful personality. His foster family describes him as an easy dog to have in their home. He’s housebroken, crate trained, and genuinely loves his crate – even though he doesn’t need it when left alone. He is currently fostered with dogs and kids and may do well with an older, calm female dog. A cat-free home is best.
Dexter already knows Sit, Sit Pretty, Stay, and Spin (a great trick for wiping paws after coming inside), and he can do them all using hand signals alone. He enjoys tough chew toys, does well with people big and small, and is a true cuddle bug. He sleeps in bed with his humans and loves being close, touching or snuggled whenever possible.
What Dexter doesn’t enjoy are leash walks and car rides. It’s likely he wasn’t exposed to these early in life, and they cause him significant anxiety. However, in a home with a fenced yard and no desire for regular outings, this wouldn’t be an issue at all.
For the right person or family, Dexter would be a loving, easygoing, stay-at-home companion who will happily be your shadow and your snuggle buddy.
